The auto industry is in trouble. The impact of a collapse in Detroit would be felt everywhere, costing three million American jobs, the loss of health care and pensions for one million retirees and deepening our economic recession.

Congress must act quickly – issuing a bridge loan to the auto industry that will keep the production line moving, and provide accountability to a vital piece of our economy.

The American auto industry must not be forced into bankruptcy. Congress needs to act soon and take immediate action to ensure the long-term stability and profitability of this industry, one that is key to the industrial sector and overall health of our economy.

You must take steps to avoid the terrible consequences that would result from a collapse of the domestic automakers, including the loss of nearly 3 million jobs across the country, by providing an emergency bridge loan to enable the auto companies to continue their operations.

However, any loan must include requirements that will protect the taxpayers, and ensure accountability standards from executives at our nation's auto manufacturers. These should include tough limits on executive compensation, and prohibit the companies from paying dividends. Furthermore, the government must be given an equity stake in the companies to protect the interests of taxpayers.
